Build Live Emotions Capture App Using Emotions API (Part II)

Aloha to the last part of the series. I hope you are ready with the development environment. You know, secret Santa told me that you are very excited to jump in and build the app.

In this article we will take a look at HTML5’s cool features such as getUserMedia(), canvas and converting canvas paint into BLOB and for the sake of simplicity and lucid writing, I have divided the code into a small chunk.

1. getUserMedia() method

The first task is to check getUserMedia() method in various browsers and normalize it by storing it in the navigator.getUserMedia.

The second task is to check whether it is supported on that browser or not. For this, we will use a simple if-else condition. If it is supported then we will continue, otherwise an alert message will appear. As per the MDN, the browser compatibility with getUserMedia() is good with the vendor prefix.

Note: At the time of developing the app, this feature was deprecated. Unfortunately, now this method has been removed from the Web standards and an experimental technology will soon replace it. It’s called MediaDevices.getUserMedia(). Read more about MediaDevices.getUserMedia() on Mozilla Developer Network.

2. Request the camera

Build Live Emotions Capture App Using Emotions API (Part II)

Once we have checked support for the getUserMedia() method, the very next thing is to request permission from the user.

The standard syntax is navigator.getUserMedia(constraints, successCallback, errorCallback);

2.1 constraints

It is a type of object where you specify the types of media to request such as video, audio, etc. along with a few parameters based on your requirements.

We won’t pass any parameter to our media. So, our syntax will be like this – 

 navigator.getUserMedia(         {          video: true         },         successCallback,          errorCallback     );

This piece of code will ask the user to provide access to their web camera. If the user grants access to web camera then a successCallback will execute otherwise errorCallback which is unfortunate as our app will be handicapped.

2.2 successCallback

Success callback is always accompanied by a parameter that we can use to create live video streaming by creating object URL using createObjectURL method.

At this point in time, you can see a live video streaming in your browser. Say hello to yourself there!

The next thing is to paint the captured image on a canvas. For this, we will leverage the HTML5 canvas.

At this point in time, we will set few global variables that we can use in subsequent code snippets.

Let’s create a canvas now.

The below snippet will take the current frame from the video and paint it on our recently drawn canvas.

As I mentioned in the first article, we won’t store users captured images on our server and will carry the whole operation at client-side. I delivered my promise. We will make use of a function that will create our canvas to a Binary Large Object (BLOB). This function is taken from Eric Bidelman’s one of the projects on GitHub. This function is only for personal use and demo purposes.

Before we use this function, let’s give the user the capability to choose whether they want to process the captured photo or want to take another. (This is a must have functionality in today’s photosensitive world where people want to try many photos before processing).

The above code snippet will convert our canvas image to Data URL. Let’s pass this variable to our magical function.

This function will return BLOB that we can pass to our AJAX call to get the result. Before, we make an AJAX call to the API server; we will need to store our API key in a variable.

Now, we are set to send the image of the user to get emotions result. Let’s crack a few more pieces of ice.

The above code skeleton can be found on the Project Oxford site under API reference of Emotions API. Please note that we have altered a few things in the skeleton to work in our case.

From the above code, we will get a JSON object. This object is stored in the result variable. Now, you have all the power to display them on the page.

With this, we have covered successCallback. Let’s have a look at errorCallback.

With this, we have completed whole if part. Let’s add an error message in the else part and call it good.

I have already developed this project with a fancy UI and other functionality. You can visit MatchMyEmo project and explore the world of possibilities with Project Oxford.

As I already outlined in my last article, Google Chrome supports getUserMedia() over secure connections. So this project will work only in Firefox.

Conclusion

MatchMyEmo is just a standalone small app for fun purposes. There are innumerable possibilities where you can use Artificial Intelligence APIs in your app. Some of the fascinating apps are already there in Microsoft’s App Gallery. Though these technologies are still in their beta phase and lack accuracy, it is a good time to learn them.

Build Live Emotions Capture App Using Emotions API (Part I)

A few months ago, I stumbled upon the API treasure of Microsoft. It was a jaw dropping moment when I saw more than a dozen Artificial Intelligence based APIs. This treasure has a sci-fi name and is known as Project Oxford which was announced in Build 2015 developer conference in San Francisco.

What is Project Oxford?

As stated on Microsoft’s blog – ‘Project Oxford helps developer to build more intelligent apps’. This project was developed to provide the developer some complex machine learning that is otherwise not possible for a single developer to build due to time and resource constraints. These APIs will add more fun and the wow factor to an app that wasn’t easy before.

The bunch of APIs is currently available for limited free usage in beta stage. It has a limited number of API calls per month, specifically ranging from 5k to 10k calls.

A two-article series will cover all the basics of Project Oxford and Emotions API. In this very first article, we will kick-start with creating an account, code of conduct for developers, our project structure etc.

What has Microsoft cooked for you?

Microsoft provides services under three broad categories namely Vision, Speech and language. We will taste only the Emotions API which comes under the Vision category.

What are we building? Another AlphaGo?

Absolutely not. My aim is to build a web app which will take user’s photos from the web camera and give live emotions as the result. The good part is that we will accomplish this goal purely using client-side. So, the JavaScript and jQuery will be used throughout the project. Be ready to dive into JavaScript jargon.

We will capture photos of the user using a cool HTML5 feature called getUserMedia(). Unfortunately, Google doesn’t honor this cool feature without the secure connection. So, note that this hosted app won’t work on Google Chrome unless hosting is on the HTTPS connection.

Creating an account

Let’s setup an account with Project Oxford.

Unfortunately, you will need a Microsoft account to register. In case, you are already a fanboy of Microsoft then go ahead and sign in.

Generating API Key

w00t, you just created an account. Now, under your profile click on ‘My Subscription’ then on that page click on ‘Request New Keys’. The real use of keys will be covered in the last article. That’s it!

Developer Code of Conduct

As a responsible developer, you must read what are Do’s and Don’ts of Project Oxford APIs. Microsoft has laid down a few guidelines which you must follow otherwise they will terminate access to the Project Oxford APIs. Here are few don’ts in laymans language.

  • Your app’s target audience must be above fourteen years.
  • Your app must not harass or threaten or violate the fundamental rights of an individual or group.
  • Your app must not find, collect, store or publish private or identifiable information of an individual or group without their knowledge and consent.

In our Emotions API, we have especially taken care of the last rule. The good news is that our app doesn’t store photos of the user. So, the user will be willing to use the app without any hesitation or privacy concern.

Project Oxford has a dedicated support community where you can post your queries and get answers. Wait! They have a nice demo and documentation for each service too. The documentation is not the pile of contents, rather they are very lucid.

REST(use)ful API

Emotions API allows us to build an application in more than half a dozen languages such as C#, Java, JavaScript, Objective-C, PHP, Python, and Ruby. We are going to use JavaScript for our application, but I would highly encourage you to explore and consider development in server-side languages as well.

We have talked a lot about and covered our app theoretically. It’s time to fold up your sleeves and start something on the machine.

Your first task is to be ready with –

  • Development environment (I prefer MAPP for Mac or WAMP server for Windows)
  • A nice code editor (I prefer Bracket)
  • jQuery library (either call from CDN or download from the official site)
  • Strong coffee (As I always say, it’s optional)

You will create three files namely – index.html where we will structure our passable markup for the app, style.css to add meat to our HTML structure and finally script.js to breathe life into our app.

In the next tutorial, we will write some basic markup and style it. In addition to that, we will also write some code to take user’s photos from the web camera and will convert that photo into a Binary Large object (BLOB) which is real white magic to our app and finally an AJAX call to get result.
